When I go through the photography I did when I was a teenager, a lot of it is very sad looking. Part is because the area I grew up just looks sadder than most other parts of Germany, part because I still connect the negative emotions I felt, taking those photos, to the photo.
That the area looks sad is not only a subjective perception thanks to a not-so-great childhood but I also heard this from people, who are from other parts of Germany/Europe, and who I took there for a couple days. There also is an article of a bigger german news website and the article is titled “It looks more depressing in Saarland than in the east”. So it’s not just me.
But I remember the day really well when I first saw those cheap plastic chairs, thrown away by someone, just laying there in front of a dirty wall of a building. Nobody cared. They were just laying there for weeks until I finally took a photo of the scene. It just resembled how I so often felt there. No perspective, depression, sadness, being unwanted and useless.
But looking back it’s at least a photo I still like and I’m happy that I took it.
